The Pune District Court Legal Services Authority on Sunday settled over 16,700 cases pending in various courts across the district, thanks to the Maha Lokadalat, which received an overwhelming response from litigants.

Terming it as the highest achievement, district legal services authority member secretary Rahul Bhosale said, “We have achieved our target successfully by disposing of pending cases, lessening some burden on the judicial system.”

The authority, with help from the district court authority, settled 16,739 pending cases amicably, which relieved both the applicants and respondents.

Over 50,000 cases pertaining to the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881, juvenile, plead guilty and pre-litigations and summary cases were identified by the authority for this special day.

Bhosale said, “As many as 5,875 cases have been withdrawn by toll booth operators during the Maha Lokadalat.”

In all, 59 panels were allotted over 35,000 pending cases and each had a judge, one lawyer and one social activist. “The panels handling juvenile crime and plead guilty cases received a huge response as no one wanted to visit the courts for trial,” Bhosale said.

The labour industrial court in Swargate also got a huge response from the litigants. Of the 250 cases pertaining to dismissal, transfer, no promotion of employees, 105 cases were disposed of amicably.

Labour Law Practitioners’ Association president Shrikant Malegaonkar said, “The court has settled over 100 pending cases for the first time in a day during the Maha Lokadalat.”

However, the Pune Family Court settled 44 of the 177 pending cases pertaining to divorce and maintenance. Five panels decided 29 of 121 cases of civil nature and 15 of 56 of criminal nature.
