IT companies in Pune are going all out to curb the high attrition rate that has plagued the sector for many years.

From providing them with Intranet social networking website services to intra-company radio stations, they are making all the efforts to retain their employees.

However, techies are still apprehensive. Some feel these attempts are superficial tactics which would end up reducing their appraisals, while some say they are too overworked to notice any such change.

“No doubt the IT companies are providing maximum facilities and amenities to their staff. There are companies which even provide sauna and gym on campus for their staff. But these amenities and facilities add to the expenditure of the company, and then our appraisals are curtailed to retain the financial condition of the company,” said a fuming Subhash Kale (name changed to protect identity) from Infosys.

“There are some companies which provide the best and cozy life on campus, but then their appraisals are as low as 2-3%. If the companies are going to adjust wages to recover costs on employee engagement activities, what is the use of them,” he said.

Another techie from Infosys, Dharmesh (name changed to protect identity), says most of the employee engagement initiatives fail to meet the purpose for which they are launched as the employees are normally too busy to even notice them.

“I have heard the news about our company starting an on campus radio station. Some colleagues say they subscribe to programming of some FM radio stations and add short interviews of star employees of Infosys to it,” Dharmesh said.

“However, I have not yet heard the radio. Who has the time to listen to radio in the office? They keep us busy with projects the entire time. But, I find the intra-company social networking site attractive. I can find time enough to post updates there and glance what others are posting once or twice a day,” he added.

But, Infosys denies that it has been curtailing appraisals. “Infosys offers employees competitive salaries, and the average wage hike is at par with industry standards. Our attrition for the last twelve months ending December 31, 2011, was 15.4% down from 15.6% the previous quarter,” said a company spokesperson.

“Our employee engagement initiatives are focused on strengthening our relationships with our employees and providing them a holistic work environment,” he further said.

But, there are many employees who are happy with the companies’ employee engagement initiatives. Tabrish Sangrar, an Infosys employee, told DNA that the initiatives create a platform which helps employees to cut across the cubicles.

“When I came across the ‘Infy Bubble’ and explored it, I realised that here is a platform wherein employees from various cultures come together and share their experiences and knowledge,” Tabrish said.

“Our company organises evening bashes and intra-company sports events which help the employees to gel along, know each other and more specifically, work despite having a tight schedule,” said Ramesh Macha, a Tech M employee.
