The court of additional sessions judge, SP Tawde on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment a 48-year-old doctor for murdering his pharmacist wife in 2008.
The convict, Sitaram Dada Sarode of Manmad, had hit his wife Sangeeta (39) with the lid of an autoclave on her head and poured acid on her.
Sarode, a BAMS doctor, and Sangita married in 1993 and they have a son aged 15 years and daughter aged 18 years. Sangeeta stayed with Sarode in Manmad till 2000 and then moved to Pune after she got the job of a pharmacist at Pune Municipal
Corporation’s Sonawane Hospital. She lived in Pune with her mother and the two children. Sarode used to visit them every 10 to 15 days.
However, he started suspecting her character and harassed her.
On August 30, 2008, at 6 pm, when Sangeeta was cooking food, Sarode hit her on the head with the lid of an autoclave. When she turned around, he threw acid on her and went to the police and surrendered.
Their son was shocked to witness the murder. Manisha collapsed after informing the police. In the meanwhile, her mother came and shifted her to a private hospital with the help of neighbours. She had sustained 45% burn injuries and succumbed to the injuries on September 5, 2008. Sangeeta’s dying declaration as well as her son’s testimony proved the guilt of the accused.
Jeweller robbed at Talegaon Dabhade
Four robbers entered a jewellery shop in Talegoan Dabhade posing as customers on Sunday at 9.30 pm. They assaulted the jeweller and robbed him of gold ornaments after threatening him with a gun and sharp-edged weapons. However, the police managed to arrest two of them and two are on the run.
Shirish Malpathak (45), owner of Bhagwati Jewellers was injured in the robbery. The Talegoan Dabhade police identified one of the arrested suspects as Mohammed Asif.
Senior inspector, Sanjay Nikam in-charge of the police station told DNA, “Malpathak owns a bungalow and shop, which are adjacent to each other. On Sunday at 9.30 pm, the suspects entered the shop under the pretext of purchasing silver rings. Suddenly, one of them locked the shop from inside and directed him to pack up all the gold and silver jewellery displayed in the shop. Malpathak resisted, but was threatened at gunpoint and slashed on the head by a suspect. They pounced on him and tied him up with a rope. However, due to the ruckus, his wife alerted the villagers.”
He added, “The four robbers ran away and one of them was arrested, while another was arrested in Lonavla. The remaining two fled to Thane. We have carried out the panchanama, but the jeweller is not able to estimate the quantity of gold he was robbed of.”
