The cyber cell of the city police has issued orders to Internet Service Providers (ISP) and users of unsecured wi-fi connections to protect their connections.

The police inspector of the cyber crime cell, Sangita Alphanso, told DNA that the police would take stern action against offenders.

The police have warned of legal action against end-users and service providers under section 144 (power to issue order in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger) of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973, and section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.

The move follows a survey that found 70% wi-fi connections in the city unsecure and could be breached easily.

After the third ‘Wardriving’ (term used for surveying unsecured wi-fi connections) in December 2010, the cyber cell found that 84% of the connections were highly vulnerable to hacking.
