Two constables attached to the Baramati rural police foiled a robbery in the wee hours of Thursday at the Suvarna Mukti Housing Society on the Baramati-Bhigwan Road. This despite the fact that they were attacked by four robbers who fled from the scene of crime. The injured policemen, Dilip Nivrutti Sonawane and Anil Kale, both residents of Baramati, have been admitted to a hospital.

According to the police, Sonawane, who is a resident of the Suvarna Mukti Housing Society, heard a sound on the first floor at 4.30am and saw two suspects trying to break into a first floor apartment. Sonawane called up his colleague Kale, who lives in an adjacent apartment.

According to deputy superintendent of police, Namdev Mittewad of Baramati, the two policemen caught two robbers in the act. The robbers panicked and fled. Soon thereafter, two more suspects who were hiding, hit the policemen with cement bricks and fled. Sonawane suffered injuries in the left eye, while Kale received injuries on the hands and stomach.

Mittewad said the policemen have been admitted to Deshpande Hospital in Baramati, from where Kale had been discharged, while Sonawane was still undergoing treatment.
