A computer engineer, Anand RM (35) from Bangalore, was in for a rude shock when his wallet, which was found by Finnish nationals, vanished into thin air after being reportedly handed over to cops. He had come to Pune to take back his pet dog, which he had kept with a friend.

The Finnish nationals handed over the wallet to two patrolling marshals outside the SGS Mall in Pune Camp on Saturday evening. They had found it in the autorickshaw which Anand had taken to go to Hotel Oakwood in Koregaon Park Annexe.
The wallet contained Rs2,700, two ATM cards, a pan card and other important documents, according to Anand.

Anand did realise his loss and ran to the road to look for the wallet, but the autorickshaw had gone by then. “People on the road told me that the Finnish nationals were staying in the nearby Phoneix Hotel. I reached the hotel and happened to bump into the Finnish nationals, who recognised me as the person who alighted from the autorickshaw and had left behind his wallet,” he said.

On enquiry, he found that the Finnish nationals had gone to the SGS Mall and deposited the wallet with the uniformed policemen outside the mall after verifying their identity cards.

“I went to the SGS Mall along with a friend, but could not locate the policemen in question. I immediately ran to the Bund Garden police station, but no one was able to help us about the whereabouts of the cops,” he said. From there he was directed to the Cantonment police station but he was still not able to find the policemen in question.

On Sunday, Anand again started the search for his wallet at the Bund Garden police station. “The policemen there asked me to get the foreigners who had deposited the wallet. When I tried to contact them, I came to know that they had left for their country in the afternoon. None of the cops were in a mood to help me, so I went to the police control room in the police commissioner’s office,” he said.

According to Anand, the staff at the control room promised to help him and broadcasted the message on the wireless network.

When DNA contacted Bund Garden police station, a woman constable said, “The gentleman had come looking for his wallet, but we were not able to help him much. The FIR in this case has been registered at the Mundhwa police station and we are trying to get to the policemen.”

The loss of the pan card has left Anand helpless. “I have no other proof of identity with me, so I don’t know what to do,” he said, pointing out that he would need proof of
identity to take his pet back to Bangalore.
