The traffic engineering department of the state highway police has completed a survey of the entire Mumbai-Pune expressway to bring it under surveillance. It has submitted a report to the state highway police headquarters in Mumbai.

DNA had published a series on unsafe travelling on Mumbai-Pune expressway recently. Later, in the beginning of February, the highway police undertook a survey of the expressway through its traffic engineering department. The department was to identify spots where advanced closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras would be installed to record speeding vehicles.

Superintendent of police (highway) Dilip Bhujbal told DNA, “A team of traffic engineering department recently completed a survey of the entire stretch of Mumbai-Pune expressway, which comes under Pune and Thane divisions of the state highway police. The team submitted the survey report to the state highway police headquarters in Mumbai, where further steps will be taken regarding installation of advanced CCTV cameras.”

When asked about details of the survey, Bhujbal said, “The details of the survey are not yet conveyed to the Pune and Thane divisions, but the head office will soon undertake the second phase of the project where they will finalise the spots where these CCTV cameras will be installed. Those spots will be soon conveyed to our division.”

The CCTV camera footage will provide details of speeding vehicles, which would enable the police to take action against them. It will also help the authorities to study accidents and find out the circumstances in which the mishaps took place.
