A week ahead of polling day, Pimpri-Chinchwad is witnessing women candidates from all social strata employing ‘bold and effective’ campaigning techniques. With 50% of the total seats reserved for women, the number of women candidates has risen this time and a total of 420 women candidates are in the fray.
Citizens, especially the middle class, normally keep away from political campaigns and avoid opening doors to supporters of candidates, especially men.
In Pimpri-Chinchwad, women candidates have adopted ‘smart, bold and aggressive’ campaign strategy in Nigdi-Pradhikaran, Chinchwad and Pimpri.
The women candidates have set up core committees of women supporters. Such committees have representatives of each housing colony and find it easy to carry out door-to-door campaigns.
Shiv Sena group leader and sitting corporator of Nigdi-Pradhikaran, Yamunanagar, Sulbha Ubale told DNA, “Women campaigners have a lot of advantage over their male counterparts. Most of the time, when we go door-to-door, women are at ease with us.
“We can even take the freedom of reaching the kitchen in the household for campaigning. Women candidates and supporters make successful efforts to establish rapport with the family members of the voters, which male candidates fail to do. That is why even male candidates are now seeking the help of women workers of the party to campaign.”
Former mayor, Aparna Doke, who is contesting the election from Chinchwad, said, “It really true that women can campaign more effectively due to their natural abilities. A woman is a born leader who can express herself effectively and deal with the people.”
