Sarees too depict political ideology. Even as woman power is leaving its mark in the civic election campaigns in Pimpri-Chinchwad, women candidates and campaigners are following the signature styles of their parties where the saree is concerned.

Saffron silk sarees are worn by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, while Kolkata cotton sarees are the peculiarity of Congress workers.

The saffron parties are particular in ensuring that their workers, especially women, follow the dress code. BJP leader in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Raju Durge told DNA, “It is true that the BJP in every election follows the dress code. The BJP had ordered 150 saffron sarees for women activists. It is a kind of dress code. Women party workers look elegant in saffron sarees. The dress code reflects unity.”

He added, “Due to this dress code, our party stands out. Most parties hire women for campaigning, but the BJP workers stand out a class apart from others.”

In the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party, candidates and their supporters prefer sarees of white, cream or other light shades. The material is usually cotton, but many go for khadi, handloom or silk. The women workersprefer temple border design and a touch of gold threadwork (zari work).
