System failure! This is what happened with the sophisticated computerised system which had been put in place to monitor Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections.

As the system kept on crashing repeatedly and since there was no alternate arrangement available, there were problems in disseminating information about trends and results.

The inadequate and faulty arrangement led to a brawl between the media persons and election officers at various counting centres.

Even media persons having passes issued by the PMC were not allowed to enter the counting centres. Frustrated, media persons contacted top officials of state election office after which they were allowed to enter the premises.

At the counting centres, monitors displayed the footage grabbed by CCTV cameras of election officials counting votes. However, there was no proper arrangement to display or announce the results or trends. Moreover, there were no facilities like drinking water.

There were problems to collect and disseminate information even at the centralised media centre at Savarkar Bhavan in Shivajinagar. The computerised system at the centre crashed soon after the counting of votes began and left everyone in a tizzy. This resulted in a lot of confusion and uncertainty.

The system at centralised media centre later became operational but all the information provided was about the final results.
