The corporator strength in Pimpri-Chinchwad area will increase after the civic polls slated for early next year. It will rise by 23 from its present number of 105.

Reason: Introduction of the multi-member ward system in the forthcoming civic elections and growth in the population of the city.

While voting was separately held for each ward under the previous system, the new system will involve clubbing of two or more wards. Hence, voters will have to elect two or more elected representatives from each ward. The number of wards in the new system would be 64.

The population within the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits as per the 2001 Census was 10 lakh, and the number of corporators for the municipal elections in 2007 was 105.

PCMC assistant commissioner, Uday Tekale, said, “As per the 2011 Census, the population has gone up to around 17.50 lakh.”
The civic officials said that it has received directives from the state election commission (SEC) to carry out the restructuring of wards for the 2011 polls.

“We hope the SEC gives us sufficient time to carry out the exercise,” they said.

According to the PCMC officials, 50% of the seats are reserved for women under the new system.

The number of seats reserved for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes and other categories will also increase in proportion to the increase in population.
