Even as the registration of nine sonography centres was suspended by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) recently, it has emerged that of the 36 cases filed since 2002 against radiologists for sex-determination tests, 17 have been acquitted.

In the last two months, surprise inspections by the civic body have revealed that many doctors and centres are flouting the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques
(PCPNDT) Act, 1994.

Advocate Milind Salunkhe, special legal advisor to the PMC for the PCPNDT Act, told DNA, “So far we have suspended registrations of nine centres and have even sealed their sonography machines. We have filed criminal cases against them and initiated civil action.”

Salunkhe said the reasons behind suspension of licences include irregularities in maintaining the records, non-compliance of furnishing information in form ‘F’, and details of patients going missing.

Dr RR Pardeshi, chief medical officer of the PMC and chairman of the advisory committee said, “The surprise inspections helped us decide which centre is not worth continuing. Procedures were followed and for the same, a meeting was held on Friday, where the advisory board committee members were present. After an exhaustive discussion, we decided to suspend their
registrations.”

The inspections took place in April and May, where the centres were given an opportunity to prove their innocence. Some centres’ licences were suspended for 15 days, while for others it was two months. “There are still some others who will have to wait till the court disposes of their case,” said Pardeshi.

Dr Vaishali Jadhav, assistant medical health officer and appropriate authority for PCPNDT Act said, “After following due process of the law, and as per PCPNDT Act, we have issued show cause notices. A second meeting in this regard will be held soon.”
