Enrolment for unique identification card (UID) in Pune city is adversely affected due to lack of enough machines. The administration is forced to extend the deadline for enrolment till December 2012.

Estimated population of Pune city is about 32 lakh and the enrolment of only 5,69,322 citizens could be completed by mid-September. The enrolment work in Pune started on January 14, 2011.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which is a nodal agency for the project in the city, on Thursday in a press statement advised citizens to not rush to UID enrolment centres as everybody would be enrolled.

Considering the population of the city there is a need of 400 machines for enrolment of all citizens within the due date.

But only 187 machines are available in the city, set up under 14 regional ward offices of PMC. There is rush of citizens for enrolment at every centre.

Earlier, the last date for completion of enrolment was decided as March 31, 2012.

Deputy municipal commissioner Praveen Ashtikar told DNA that the enrolment exercise gained momentum after May when more machines were made available. Maximum enrolment was done in June, July and August.

Under the Centre’s UID project, four private agencies — Terasoft, Wipro, Smartchip and Mahaonline — have been appointed through the state government for enrolment in the city. Central Bank of India has also started enrolment centres in its branches.

Machines are used to electronically record information of citizens like fingerprints, iris (eye) scanning, photograph, name and address.
