The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has swung into action to repair and maintain its important auditorium, Balgandharva Rangmandir, after the recent fiasco during the presentation of a play, Hamidabaichi Kothi.

Many members of the audience voiced their irritation at the lack of facilities when the play, about an artiste living in a red-light area, was presented on Saturday night in the auditorium. There was disruption during the presentation of the drama.

With the organisers reportedly declaring that they would never present a play at the Balgandharva Rangmandir again, PMC standing committee chairman, Ganesh Bidkar, visited the auditorium to review the situation.

Bidkar told the media on Monday that the theatre artistes’ reaction is a matter of concern and the auditorium would be repaired soon.
He met the office-bearers of Marathi Natya Parishad on Sunday and Monday and requested them to present the problems in writing so that the civic body could work on it.

He said artistes complained about lack of facilities in make-up room, poor maintenance of toilets and lack of proper
rehearsal room.

Bidkar has asked officers to prepare estimates and proposal for auditorium repairs within eight days and assured that funds will be made available.

He directed officials to immediately undertake remedial measures regarding the water logging problem in the cellar due to natural stream, besides exploring the possibility of building a new rehearsal room as the present one in the cellar is not of use.
The artistes also complained about 150 chairs that need repairs. Bidkar estimated that the repairs would require more than Rs1 crore.
