In an effort to save a 200-year-old banyan tree, the owner of the Dhangarbaba temple near Kalewadi, Chinchwad, has allowed the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to demolish a part of his temple to make way for the bus rapid transit system (BRTS) route.

Speaking to DNA, the temple’s owner, Chandrakant Nakhale, said although the temple was not in danger, he has permitted the civic body to clear about 2 metres of the temple property to save the tree.

“Only a few branches of this old tree would now have to be sacrificed,” he said.

This tree at the Dhangarbaba Temple near Kalewadi in Thergaon is located between Kalewadi Phata and Sai Chowk. It was facing the threat of being axed to make way for the BRTS. Apart from being a landmark in the area, the tree has been a favourite resting spot for many people in the area.

Many local residents had appealed to the civic authorities to save the tree. Speaking to DNA, PCMC’s garden superintendent, Suresh Salunke, said he was aware of people’s sentiments about the tree and efforts were being made to save it.

“Now we will not cut the entire tree but only a few branches would be pruned to clear the route,” he said.
