In an inspiring story of being positive in the face of death and tradition, Manisha, the wife of city-based paint dealer, Veerendra Vora (63), went against religious Jain dictates and donated the kidneys of her brain-dead husband last week. This has given a fresh lease of life to two kidney patients.

Veerendra Vora, partner in the 70-year-old Camp-based, Shahbad Cement Depot, collapsed in his car on MG Road on the morning of January 26. He was rushed to Jehangir Hospital, where he was declared brain-dead following brain haemorrhage.

His wife Manisha was ready to donate her husband’s kidneys immediately, but being Jains, she was constrained by the Jain philosophy, which does not encourage community members to donate any body parts after death.
However, Manisha stood her ground, supported by her brother-in-law, Hemendra, and decided to go ahead with the donation.

Speaking to DNA on Monday in her home near Babajan Chowk, Manisha said, “My husband was a very broad-minded, practical man who liked the idea of donating body parts after death. We, therefore, went ahead.”

Manisha said that she and her three children — sons Nilesh (36), Nehal (32) and daughter Bhairavi (19) — were happy with the decision. “We feel satisfied that my husband was able to give a fresh lease of life to two persons,” she said.

Vora’s son Nilesh, however, said that the process of matching kidney tissues to the patients took 24 hours, as the samples had to be sent to Mumbai.
“They should build this infrastructure in Pune to save time. There is also no liver transplant facility in Pune. Otherwise, we could have donated my father’s liver also,” Nilesh said.

The late Veerendra Vora was an alumnus of the College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) and was known to be a soft-spoken, kind-hearted man, who regularly donated to the needy in the city.
