City’s anti-corruption wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided the houses of two retired army officers on Tuesday for allegedly selling 0.96 acres of prime defence land in Pune Cantonment to Kalpataru Builders. They also raided the office of the city-based builder.

The retired officers, whose residences were searched, are Vice Chief Lt. Gen Nobel Thamburaj PVSM, SM (retd.) and S R Nayyar, Defence Estate Officer (Retd.), Southern Command, Pune Circle, Pune.

The four-member CBI team claimed that they have seized incriminating documents from the office of Kalpataru Builders at Koregaon Park, and some of them are still under scrutiny.

A statement issued by the CBI said that it had received a complaint from the Army headquarters in New Delhi after which a case was filed on January 30 against Thamburaj, Nayyar, Kalpatru Builders as well as others for criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal misconduct.

The officials added that Thamburaj and Nayyar settled the matter out of court despite the fact that the verdict was in favour of the army. By doing so, they showed gross misconduct on their part as public servants.

They also said that Thamburaj and Nayyar, by ignoring the defence ministry’s rules related to lease, caused pecuniary advantage to Kalpataru Builders to the tune of Rs 46 crore without any public interest. Deputy superintendent of police of the CBI’s anti-corruption wing, Rajpal Singh, told DNA, “We have seized some importance files from the office.”

Other CBI team conducted a simultaneous search at Thamburaj’s residence in Fatimanagar area. Superintendent of CBI, Vidya Kulkarni, told DNA, “Our teams conducted searches at the residence of Thamburaj in Fatimanagar, Nayyar’s house in Lullanagar and the office of Kalpataru Builders in Koregaon Park.”
