Even as civic hospitals are still dithering over allowing medical check-ups in medico-legal cases (MLC), Pune Cantonment Board’s (PCB) Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Hospital has now taken the lead and has started check-ups of accused in police custody from Tuesday.

Until now, Sassoon General Hospital was the only place where police could take  jail inmates, accused or suspects for medical check-ups, a mandatory exercise
according to law.

In Pimpri-Chinchwad, the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) only handled casualty and routine remand suspects. This resulted in loss of time due to the distance as well as long waiting list at Sassoon Hospital, besides increasing pressure on the medical team at Sassoon.

Despite the state government resolution in 2009, directing 14 hospitals — including PMC-run civic hospitals — to carry out medical check-ups for police cases, corporate hospitals have not yet started the check-ups, including seven reputed hospitals in PMC and five in PCMC areas.

Resident medical officer Dr SM Mahajan told DNA, “It is a good initiative and we are planning to arrange training for our doctors at Sassoon General Hospital, so that they too can learn how to handle such cases.’’

Deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Dnyaneshwar Phadtare told DNA, “A  resolution was passed by the state government in 2009. But the hospitals failed to implement the order and we were in constant touch with them. We have 29 police stations in the city and suspects and jail inmates were taken to Sassoon Hospital due to which our staff had to wait till their number came and a lot of time was spent in travelling and waiting for medical check-up.’’

Dr Ajay Chandanwale, dean of Sassoon Hospital said, “For many years, our hospital was taking care of MLCs and doing a good job. However, if another government hospital takes up similar check-ups, it is good for the police and will reduce
our workload.’’
