After Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Ahmedabad, now Pune, which was off the terror map all these years, has become the latest Indian city to be scarred by terrorism.

A powerful explosion in an upmarket restaurant on Saturday killed at least nine persons, including four foreigners and five women, and injured more that 45 people, 19 of them seriously.

The blast, believed to be caused by a plastic explosive, occurred at the German Bakery restaurant on North Main Road, Koregaon Park area at around 7.00pm. The bakery is located on North Main Road at Koregaon Park, close to the Jewish Chabad House and Osho International Meditation Resort.

The blast was so powerful that people were thrown out of the restaurant even as it ripped through the cement-concrete wall of the restaurant and the overhead shed collapsed. Glass panes in the German Bakery, and in the neighbouring Cafe Coffee Day and Hotel ‘O’ shattered from the impact, injuring many people within and outside the restaurant.

The road adjoining the bakery was littered with body parts as shocked citizens ran helter-skelter following the impact.

Addressing the media, joint commissioner of police Rajendra Sonawane said that the police suspected the explosion was caused by a bomb.

Even as ambulances rushed to the spot for a rescue operation, bomb detection and disposal teams of the Pune police, the army, and the anti-terrorist squads arrived to carry out their operations.

The hotel’s cashier was among those detained by the police for questioning. The explosive is believed to have been planted inside the restaurant, which enjoys a large clientele of foreigners, more so during the weekend.

The restaurant had a reputation as a place where foreigners could interact with drug pushers, which was another reason for its popularity.
