The Bombay high court today directed the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) to give wide publicity to guidelines framed for aspiring disabled medical students who need the assistance of a scribe/writer to write their exams.
A division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice DG Karnik were hearing a petition filed by Nachiket Ramane, a Standard XII (Science) student of DG Ruparel College. Ramane, who will be appearing for a Maharashtra government Common Entrance Test (MH-CET) in May 2011, moved the court urging for a direction to the DMER.
Ramane’s petition said he is suffering from locomotor disability and cannot write without assistance. He had first applied to the DMER seeking permission for a writer but there had been no response. His advocate Jamshed Mistry argued that the boy was “under confusion and great stress” because of this.
Ramane was worried whether he will be permitted to appear in the examination with the writer or not.
Government pleader DA Nalawade submitted that the DMER has indeed framed guidelineswho need writers’ assistance.
The judges then directed the director, DMER to give wide publicity to these guidelines.
