The recording of evidence in the 26/11 terror attack case will spill over to next week, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam indicated on Wednesday when the deadline set by first additional principal judge ML Tahaliyani to close the prosecution’s case expired.
Four doctors, who had conducted the postmortem on the victims, and three policemen — additional commissioner of police (crime) Deven Bharati; assistant chief investigating officer Ramesh Mahale; and chief investigating officer Ashok Duraphe — are yet to depose. Bharati and Mahale were in Nagpur on Wednesday with their senior, Rakesh Maria, to attend the assembly session.
Defence advocate KP Pawar sought three days’ time to study the postmortem notes on Wednesday morning. The judge then decided that the examination-in-chief be recorded till Friday, while the cross-examination will be taken up on Monday. Three doctors, who had conducted postmortem on the victim’s bodies, deposed on Wednesday.
The sole surviving gunman, Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, who is suffering from fever, was seen wearing a green sweater to court. Kasab was then taken away for examination while evidence was being recorded.
