Pimpri-Chinchwad mayor Yogesh Behl on Tuesday ordered a probe into the alleged irregularities and corruption in implementing the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme.

The move comes after a 65-year-old slum-dweller, Dastagir Manjush Shaikh, committed suicide in Vetalnagar, Chinchwad, on Monday after he was pronounced ineligible to get a house under the SRA scheme of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

The family members of the deceased alleged that Shaikh ended his life out of frustration after a PCMC official, Macchindra Kumbhar, asked him for Rs40,000 in bribe for allotting a house under the slum rehabilitation scheme.

PCMC assistant commissioner, AA Karche told DNA, “We have issued suspension notices to recovery officer Macchindra Kumbhar and his junior, Ravi Kamble. We have also sought a detailed explanation from them regarding the allegations.”

Congress corporator Bhausaheb Bhoir said, “It was very unfortunate that a slum-dweller committed suicide. The allegations need to be probed and the PCMC should take strong action against the culprits. The authorities should ensure that incidents like this do not take place in future.”

Shiv Sena corporator from Yamunanagar, Sulbha Ubale, said that she had also received several complaints against PCMC officials demanding extra money for handing over the tenements to slum-dwellers.

“These people do not have any idea about the eligibility criteria for getting a house under SRA. There should be more transparency and the PCMC should put up a list of beneficiaries at its head office,” Ubale said.

Sena corporator from Bhosari, Seema Savale, alleged that civic officials demand something between Rs50,000 and Rs1 lakh as bribe from slum-dwellers.
