These were Dilip Kumar’s words at the inauguration of Priya Dutt’s new office at Kalina.
Sanjay Dutt may have deserted her, but Priya Dutt has her close ones right beside her for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. An ailing Dilip Kumar, known to be close to Priya’s actor-turned-politician father, the late Sunil Dutt, showed his support by inaugurating Priya’s new election office at Kalina, Santa Cruz (E).
The veteran actor, who was accompanied by wife Saira Banu, said it was an emotional moment for him. “Sunil was like my brother and she (Priya) is like my daughter,” said the legendary actor. “Sunil, Raj Kapoor, and I lived in the same locality and I was very fond of him. On my way here, I kept thinking about him. My heart is full of joy today and this is because I’m happy for Priya. The women living in my locality all pray for her, and so do I,” he added.
“I pray that my sweet child gets all the success, respect and honour due to her,” said Kumar. Dutt, too, got emotional, “I often feel my dad’s absence but today Dilip uncle has given me a lot of strength,” she said, adding, “After my father's death, if there’s one person I love and respect with all my heart, it is Dilip uncle. He has boosted my confidence by coming today.” Priya also spoke about her estranged brother.
“I am not hurt with Sanjay’s behaviour. Just because he is not with me on this platform, doesn’t mean he is not with me at all.” Congressmen and allies from the RPI, NCP, Youth Congress, Seva Dal, the Mahila Congress, were also present. Priya took on the BJP in her speech.
“Our party has the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Ambedkar. That makes the hand [the symbol of the party] strong enough to crush all communal forces. We don’t want to divide the country, but want to provide an equal platform to the aam aadmi.”
