The water problems in the city and the numerous complaints from residents have forced the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to take action. In a notice to private housing societies, the BMC has asked the former to allow them to draw water from their bore wells to meet the water scarcity.
The hydraulic department of the BMChas taken this step as a precautionary measure to ensure that the existing supply levels are not disrupted. “At present the situation isn’t grim. But during summer months, water will evaporate and there will be a higher demand. So as a precaution, we are tapping alternate sources of water. While we are repairing private wells in housing societies, we have also taken an undertaking from them that they will make their well water available for public use,” said Anil Diggikar, additional municipal commissioner (projects).
Notices have already been issued to societies in various administrative wards to hand over their wells for utilisation of water from private wells in housing societies.
“It’s our duty to co-operate in a crisis situation but BMC shouldn’t dictate terms to housing societies. We use bore well water for flushing purposes and save BMC water everyday,” said M Navalkar, secretary, Manoj Co-operative housing society in Prabhadevi.
S Gadkari, assistant municipal commissioner, G (South) said, “We are not concentrating on water sources that are already open to the public. We will use water from those societies which have private wells. If they are unwilling we will ask the collector to intervene and give a requisition.”
