The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed Green Sea Private, a Delhi-based firm, to clear red tape for execution of Gargai and Pinjal water projects on schedule. These projects can end the city’s water woes permanently by augmenting additional 1,305 million litres of water per day (MLD).

The city receives 3,400 MLD per day against a demand of 4,000 MLD and in the next five years, the demand will increase. Then it will be difficult for corporation to meet the population’s water demand. So, the corporation has decided to rope in a private firm to augment the project on time.

Delhi-based Green Sea will obtain permissions and clearances to enter the Thane forest vicinity from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The corporation has paid Rs4.5 crore to the firm and asked them to prepare a report with data of the flora and fauna, bio-diversity and the demarcation of land. “They will also give details- number of affected people, acres of land that will be needed, rehabilitation and its total expenditure. We expect the report to be ready in eight months. This appointed firm is an expert in preparing reports and getting the necessary clearances,” said an official from the BMC’s water project department.

He added that the firm was hired because most of the developmental projects were stalled by the MoEf. “We don’t want the water projects to be put on hold due to the noncompliance of government formalities,” he added.

Gargai water project, that will cost Rs2,700 crore, will start in 2014 and is set to be completed by 2017. It will supply 440 MLD water to city. The Pinjal water project will carried out by Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority (MMRDA). The estimated cost of this project is Rs2,100 crore and will augment additional 865 MLD. The work at Pinjal will begin in 2014 and is set to be completed in 2021.

“As per the survey, Pinjal has more potentially to store and supply maximum water. So the government has decided to undertake this project. Beside, providing, 865 MLD water to Mumbai city, government is considering the distribution of  extra stored water at Pinjal to adjoining metropolitan cities including Thane and Navi Mumbai. If there is more water, it can be used for irrigation. This will make the local farmers happy,” said senior civic officials.
