Amid speculation that the Congress high command has put him on notice, CM Prithviraj  Chavan met the party president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday, but chose to keep mum on what transpired between them. “How can I say if she’s satisfied with my performance,” he quipped when reporters asked him about Sonia’s rating of his  tenure.

Chavan’s meeting comes in the backdrop of a series of developments in state politics as well as criticism by the two-term South Mumbai MP Milind Deora that the state suffered from a “decision deficit”. Considering that the leadership must take a number of decisions like the appointment of the state unit chief and the head of the party’s Mumbai unit, the Chavan meeting could not have come at a more speculative time.

Chavan, who also met prime minister Manmohan Singh, however, downplayed the Deora criticism and hinted that he may not have been fully aware of all the developments at the state-level.

But it is being perceived that Chavan’s tenure as the chief minister of a politically and commercially important state has not given the desired comfort level to the party leadership. Apart from the party legislators’ criticism of his functioning style, Chavan’s indecisiveness is being held responsible for the unchecked growth of ally NCP in the state.

Two recent events, the submission of an interim report by the judicial commission appointed to probe the Adarsh scam and the report of the CAG indicting two former CMs Vilasrao Deshmukh and Narayanrao Rane have the potential of altering the state’s political landscape.

Considering that the Congress leadership is in the process of formulating it’s options for a party revamp,  the Chavan’s meet assumes more than the ordinary significance.
