An unidentified person, claiming to be member of terror outfit al-Qaeda, telephoned at Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan's official residence to known about his whereabouts.

However, police have described it as a "prank call".

"The caller who introduced himself as the member of al-Qaeda threatened and wanted to know whereabouts of the chief minister. The caller phoned at 'Varsha' bungalow yesterday," said a senior police official.

Mumbai police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal said, "It appears to be a prank call. We are probing to know where the call was made from."

However, Dayal refused to divulge further details of the phone call.

The country has been put on high alert following Intelligence inputs that Pakistan-based terrorists may strike during the festive season.

The Centre has asked state governments to take all possible steps to foil attempts by militant groups, particularly Lashkar-e-Taiba, to disrupt peace during the festival season.
