Matunga residents are a peeved lot. The fountain at the centre of Napoo Garden on Telang Road that is managed by the civic body has not been working for almost two years.

And it’s not due to water shortage in the city, but because there is no electricity to run it due to non-payment of bill. BMC did not pay the bill because the address was not updated. Earlier, the central authority was paying it, but after the management moved to the ward level, no one updated the address and hence the bills went unpaid.

“We have initiated the process and the fountain will start soon,” said Sanjay Kurhadkar, assistant municipal commissioner of the F / North ward office.

What has irked the residents further is that a year-and-a-half ago, when the garden was being revamped, their suggestion that the defunct fountain make space for a lawn for children to play was set aside. “Since it was not working, we requested that it make way for a lawn. Children can use the space for playing, but the officers insisted that a fountain in working condition would come up,” said Chandrika Vora, a resident.

However, when the fountain did not function again after the revamp for over a year, residents pursued the case with the ward and got the details. “Last year, they said that it could not start due to water shortage. When we probed further, we got to know that there is no power connection due to arrears in bills,” said Nikhil Desai, another resident.
