The power tariff in Maharashtra would be increased shortly to allow Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco) to recover an additional revenue of Rs432.5 crore from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) which has been allowed by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC).

MSEDCL sources said the regulatory body has recently directed that Mahagenco should recover the additional revenue from MSEDCL in six equal monthly installments as fuel surcharge. MSEDCL would be required to recover the cost from power
consumers.

It was not clarified when and how much power tariff would be increased by MSEDCL to recover the amount.

MERC had earlier issued an order on the petition filed by Mahagenco for annual revenue requirement for 2010-11 in last September. The regulatory body has now agreed that there were computational errors in the order and hence, it has now allowed Mahagenco to recover an additional revenue of Rs432.5 crore.

The regulatory body had made a similar computational error in disposing off the petition of MSEDCL for annual revenue requirement for 2010 -11 in last September. Hence, the power consumers had to bear burden of Rs1,136 crore, according to the sources.

MSEDCL officials are surprised due to the repeated mistakes made by the MERC because it has an army of consultants who are paid lakhs of rupees as fees.

The officials said the mistakes made by MERC lead to frequent power tariff hikes. Even though the mistake is made by the regulatory body, the MSEDCL has to face the wrath of power consumers. It has become a regular feature that the MERC makes mistakes in approving proposals of annual revenue requirement of power companies under the control of the state government and then the companies have to file review petitions to get the errors rectified.
