Nashikites have reacted strongly to the power tariff hike. While BJP staged a demonstration to condemn the hike, the consumer association is all set to approach higher authority for redressal and the industry feels burdened.

Reacting to the hike, BJP city chief Laxman Savji said, “Such a hike in power tariff is seen only in Maharashtra. This is a result of lack in planning and rampant corruption in the power sector; the ministry the bureaucracy and the Maharashtra Electricity Redressal  Council are all responsible for this. On October 15, 2011, the MERC conducted a hearing regarding the proposed hike, which was nothing but a farce. How otherwise would the hike be implemented when all concerned had raised objection to the proposal?"

The industry feels burdened. “The industry is looked upon as a prime sector but the fact remains that it is most neglected in terms of infrastructure. The present price hike makes no sense. At the MERC hearing the industry representation had asked the MSEDCL to recover the losses rather than raising the tariff. All these years the power problem exists, there should have been proper planning and execution for power generation by the government rather than buying power at higher rates. We definitely condemn this hike”, expressed Dhananjay Bele, president Nashik Industries Manufacturers’ Association.

The farmers have protested too. “The present hike in power tariff has come as a big blow to the farmer who is already facing dire situations. There are calamities like the nature and the market. The natural calamities are to be borne but at least such calamities like price hike need to be controlled properly. A very lax attitude of the government to the issue of power has led to such a hike. It makes the survival of the farmer more difficult”, stated Dr Girdhar Patil, president Shetkari Sanghatana.

The common man is dumb struck. Consumer activist and president of Nashik District Grahak Panchyat plans to seek redressal with higher authority. “This hike is just not fair on the consumer. The MSEDCL needs to take care of its losses, thefts and work out a proper system of recovery. Instead it penalizes all the consumers.

The consumer association had objected to the proposed hike on October 15, in Nashik, we had even staged a farmers’ sit in agitation demanding recasting of 20,000 bills issued to farmers which need to be corrected. The company does not abide by other rules and norms of supply like minimum hours supply in cities and villages; there it implements load shedding, there is no proper system for grievance redressal, ect.

Rampant corruption and lack of transparency all such factors are responsible for this hike. We will create awareness among the common user and approach the higher authority to revert the decision of this hike."
