Several housing societies on NIBM Road are paying for not understanding the importance of water conservation and rainwater harvesting.

Already paying through the nose for water tankers, residents had to get an extra tanker to play Holi.

Even as water shortage cast a gloomy shadow on the festivity, citizens who wished to play the festival of colours had to pay more for getting extra water.

Lunkad Gold Coast Housing Society in Vimannagar was one of the societies that had to shell out more to get extra water for Holi. The society with 274 flats needs 13 tankers every day and each tanker costs Rs400.

Though the society intended to use less water during Holi, there was no option but to get extra tanker. The society’s monthly budget for water tankers is about Rs1.5 lakh.

The acute water shortage in Vimannagar area has left the housing societies with no choice but to get water tankers.

Nyati Enclave in Vimannagar restricted their celebrations due to water shortage. They are also bearing the cost for purification of the water that they get from tankers as they have their own purification plant. They have to pay the charges for the purification plant as per the industrial rate.

The residents of DSK Garden Enclave in Undri also had to pay more for getting an extra tanker. They are already getting several tankers in a day.

“The children’s spirit was dampened due to shortage of water. The elders too restricted themselves by just playing dry Holi,” said Sadhana Inamdar, a resident of one of the societies on NIBM Road that too is facing water scarcity.

Many of the societies blame the builders for ignoring their responsibility to ensure proper water supply.
