The Amboli Police Station has booked the instructor of Shahaji Raje Bhosale Sports complex (Andheri Sports Complex) for the drowning of seven-year-old Qasim Siddiqui. Siddiqui drowned during a swimming session and died on Friday evening. The swimming pool was inaugurated two days ago by mayor Shraddha Jadhav.

The incident took place on Friday around 7.30pm when Siddiqui, a member of the swimming pool, went swimming with his mother Siddiqa. After some time she could not see him as the pool was crowded. Siddiqui was suddenly seen drowning in the deeper section of the swimming pool.

“Siddiqui’s friend Yash saw him drowning. He then raised an alarm following which instructor Raju Palkar immediately jumped in to the water to save him. He rushed him to the hospital where he was declared dead” said the police officer.

Senior police inspector Kailash Ghamande of the Amboli Police Station said, “We have booked the swimming instructor Jayendra Muskar, 44, for negligence. The student’s safety was his responsibility”. He further added: “We are recording the statements of all those who were present when the incident took place including the family members and management of the swimming pool to know whose fault it was.”

“The preliminary investigation showed that Siddiqui had not tied the safety belts properly and when he dove he swallowed excess water,” said police officer on condition of anonymity.

Siddiqui was a Std II student of St Xavier School in Vile Parle (West). Siddiqui’s family said he was a good swimmer and were surprised that he drowned. He lived with his mother Siddiqa, four aunts and three uncles at her parents’ house in Bardha Wadi, Andheri (west). His father resides separately in Nerul. His mother alleged that the swimming pool instructors were not attentive enough and this led to her son’s death.
