While the entire city was shell shocked and stunned by the gory mishaps that took place on Wednesday morning, most politicians from city mayor to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan rushed to the Sassoon General Hospital wearing a considerate, sympathetic face.

Since the code of conduct for civic elections is in place, the politicians tactfully avoided making any promises or announcing compensation to the victims. The job was left to MSRTC managing director Dipak Kapoor.

Although some of the relatives of the injured complained that many medical facilities were lacking at Sassoon General Hospital, Pawar said all necessary treatment was being provided to the injured. According to Pawar, after the code of conduct is lifted, a meeting will be held with the hospital authorities to see what more facilities are needed for treatment.

Pawar said, “If needed, the injured will be sent to other hospitals for facilities that were not available at Sassoon Hospital.’’ He clarified that the police should be given time to investigate the case further.

“Only after a thorough investigation, it will be clear, if the driver was mentally disturbed. If the driver had driven the bus  to Gangapur on Tuesday, then how can his mental state be unstable?’’

He has appealed to people to stay calm and not to believe in rumours as the situation is under control. He described the incident as unfortunate as it happened on the eve of Republic Day. When asked why did it take so long for the police to control the driver, he said, “The police had restrictions, because there were many people around, and for the citizens’ safety, the police could not shoot randomly.’’

Other political leaders like MP Supriya Sule and  co-operation minister Harshawardhan Patil also visited the victims. Sule said, “It was unfortunate and all the necessary will help for treatment will be provided for the injured.’’

She also said the road safety system in Tamil Nadu needs to be replicated in the state. She suggested that MSRTC should hold regular medical check-ups of their employees.

Other city leaders like Ankush Kakade, BJP city president Vikas Mathkari also described the incident as unfortunate. Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal too visited the injured at the hospital and enquired about their health.

Even MP Suresh Kalmadi, who is yet to come to Pune since his release from Tihar Jail, has sent his condolences from New Delhi. Kalmadi, in his condolence message, said, “I would sure meet the families of dead and injured when I reach Pune.’’
