The Mumbai police will soon start a dedicated SMS helpline that would cater to the needs of citizens who are victims of corruption. The helpline will mainly entertain bribery related information and if the complaint is false, action will be taken against the informer.

According to the police sources, the new initiative is called ‘City Grievance Mechanism’. “There will be two dedicated helpline numbers, on which the citizens, whose complaints are not attended by police station or the deputy commissioners, can complain to the commissioner,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

He added that both the numbers will be monitored by an inspector-rank officer in the control room. “These numbers are only for providing information through SMS. A register would be maintained for the SMS received on the helplines and details about the informer.”

“The dedicated numbers would only be for providing information about paying or demanding bribes or if someone is forced by the policeman to pay money illegally. It won’t be an emergency number, as there are many other helplines for the facility,” said deputy commissioner of police, operations, Rajkumar Vhatkar.

“Once the information is provided, proper inquiries will be made to know if the complaint is genuine and if it is found to be false, then action will be taken against the informer. “said another police officer.

“The numbers would be made available for the citizens soon and we would put up these numbers on the police sign boards and banners,” he added.

“This initiative will surely bring down the corruption to a certain extent,” said police commissioner, Arup Patnaik.

A guidance cell
Mumbai police chief Arup Patnaik also has plans to set up a Vocational Guidance and Placement Cell for the children of policemen who are planning to serve in the public and private sector.

According to Patnaik, the cell is mostly for the constabulary. It is likely to be set up in the Mumbai Police Headquarters at Crawford Market. “We will use the goodwill of the force and ask the companies to come to our placement cell,” said Patnaik.
