Home minister RR Patil’s unveiled threat to police officers has created panic in the force. Not wanting to take chances, the cops have taken to shutting orchestra bars much earlier than the 1.30am deadline.

According to the law, orchestra bars can stay open as long as only four female ‘singers’ are present inside after 9.30pm. However, now the police are ensuring that all the bar girls are evacuated after 9.30pm itself.

“It appears that we now have no other job than to man these bars. If bar girls are seen inside or if the bars stay open beyond the deadline, we will be taken to task and made scapegoats. Hence, we don’t want to take any chances,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity.

The police officers say the early closure is also because these so-called singers indulge in prostitution in the garb of being artistes. The officers say that bar managers hide many girls behind well-concealed walls to replace the singers who are picked up by customers for prostitution.

Dance bars were banned as they have a negative influence on society. However, the officers say that though dancing has stopped in the bars, the prostitution racket continues in most of them.
