In one of the costliest procurement drives undertaken after the 26/11 terror strikes, the state police is all set to place orders for sophisticated hi-tech equipment by the end of the month. The most important item on the shopping list is the modern explosive and drug detection equipment, considered the best in the world.

The equipment includes a CG ionscan chromatography system, gel cameras for ballistic
cavitation studies, image documentation devices, DNA testing chemicals and equipment, a bone disruption system and a microscopic spectrophotometer. According to highly-placed sources, the equipment is especially used to detect and pinpoint the exact location of even small quantities of hidden explosives like RDX, and includes chemicals required to destroy them, as also some kinds of narcotics.

The said systems were first designed for the US Coast Guards but were later allowed to be used by select agencies and anti-terror forces around the world, the sources revealed.
The police force is also set to acquire protective equipment and accessories like bomb suits, explosive detectors, non-linear junction detectors, remote wire cutters, bullet-proof shields, body protectors, mobile bulletproof defenders, and heavy-duty search lights.
“After finalising the bids, the expert committee will place orders by the end of the month and all equipment will be procured by the end of April,” informed a senior official.

Though the officials refused to divulge the overall cost, it is reliably learnt that the budget for the entire procurement is well over Rs100 crore.
