The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), an umbrella organisation of farmers in Maharashtra, has claimed that the builders lobby was pushing for the Rs500-crore closed water pipeline project of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

Addressing a press conference on Friday in Pune, BKS president Mauli Tupe said farmers of Maval taluka are protesting against the water pipeline project for the last three years.

“Over 15,000 acres of agricultural land in Maval taluka depends on live stream of the river for irrigation. If the water pipeline project goes through, those lands would turn fallow in absence of water and the farmers would be forced to sell their lands. The builder lobby is fuelling the politicos, who are pushing for this project,” Tupe said.

He criticised the Pune rural police for the excessive use of force on agitating farmers. He was critical of the action of SP Sandeep Karnik. “Karnik
has been changing his statements over the last three days,” Tupe said.

He also denied that the protesters had come armed with stones to attack the police.
Tupe trained his guns on deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.

“Pawar had time and again told us that he would push for the project and the firing on Tuesday was at his behest,” he claimed. He said the BKS will approaching the National Human Rights Commission over the issue.
