The 13-km stretch from Dapodi to Nigdi, which is dotted with potholes, has turned into a danger zone for commuters, claiming eight lives in the last three days alone.

However, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is yet to initiate steps to repair the road. Two persons were killed and three others injured on Thursday night after a truck hit the top of the grade separator at Morwadi in Pimpri.

Last Tuesday, six people were killed on the flyover on the same stretch.

Commuters said that it is very difficult to drive on the stretch during the monsoon due to water-logging at the grade separators and potholes filled with water.

There are three grade separators in Akurdi, Chinchwad and Pimpri on this stretch and two flyovers in Nigdi and Phugewadi.
The PCMC engineering department coordinator, Dilip Kudale, told DNA, “The reason for formation of potholes at the grade separators is due to the fact that half the portion is made of concrete and the rest is bituminous blocks. The potholes form mainly in the bituminous block sections.”

The civic officials added that due to incessant rains over the last three days, they are facing problems in carrying out repair works on this stretch.

Commuters travelling on this stretch expressed anger over the civic body’s negligence in the matter. Pooja Sharma, a software engineer, who works at Talwade IT Park, said that Nigdi-Dapodi is a very important stretch for commuters travelling from Pune to Mumbai.

“How could the civic authorities turn a blind eye towards the maintenance of the stretch, especially the fast lane where there is only one signal at Nashik Phata and vehicles ply at high speed?” Sharma said.
