The Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training (MSCERT) has decided to change the syllabus for standards I, III, V and VII from the academic year 2012-13. State education officials described the new syllabus as ‘more pleasant and practical’ and said that the syllabus for standards II, IV, VI and VIII are also scheduled to be changed.

MSCERT director Shridhar Salunkhe said, “To include the new education pattern, we have decided to change the curriculum. We had a meeting with experts to discuss this issue on Tuesday. The basic idea is to make the syllabus easy and tension-free for students.”

He added, “The current curriculum focuses more on writing answers. The new syllabus will focus more on activity-based learning. Outdated subjects and chapters will be removed and more informative ones will be added.”

According to top officials at the state education department, the government is all set to effect changes in the curriculum of primary and upper primary classes in accordance with the Right to Education (RTE) Act. It is learned from sources that the mathematics syllabus will also undergo extensive changes. Experts from MCERT are providing training to those assigned to frame the new syllabus.

According to the RTE Act, it is mandatory for the state to give free education to children between the ages 6 and 14.

The Maharashtra government has already started implementing the law strictly. Officials said the new syllabus will be ‘more student-friendly and practical’ as the law says that student cannot be failed in the exams.
