With the Union cabinet clearing the 12-car train proposal for harbour line, railway officials are busy working on how to negotiate the practical problems and engineering challenges that they will face.

“Stations in Navi Mumbai have been converted to accommodate 12-car trains, so we will not face major problems between

Mankhurd and Wadala stations. The challenge is between CST and Wadala stations, particularly on the elevated corridors,’’ said a senior Central Railway (CR) official.

A 2008 report with detailed plans and drawings prepared by the divisional office of CR had worked out the cost estimates at Rs179.31 crore.

A fresh report is now being prepared by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation.

The survey had found that there will be engineering challenges at a few stations —  Dockyard and Sandhurst Road stations are too close and there is a no space at the north-end of platform number one at CST where harbour lines terminate.

“Platform number one at CST would have to be extended further by 65m to accommodate trains, but there’s virtually no space there as it runs into the administrative building,” the official added.
“The building on Dr DN Road accommodates various CR offices and any change would require a major realignment of either the building or the existing platforms.”

Lack of space is also the problem between Sandhurst Road and Dockyard Road stations. “The distance between the two stations is currently only 910m. If we extend platforms by 65m on either side of the two stations, the distance between the two stations will further reduce.”

Moreover, the extension will have to be done only in one direction because at the south end of Sandhurst Road station there is a gradient and on the north end of Dockyard are passenger bridge ramps.
