For the third time, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will float a tender for its centre business district (CBD) project, better known as the City Centre project.

PCMC officials said the tender would be floated by the end of July, inviting bids from private parties for construction on 35.5 acres in Chinchwad near the Auto Cluster, off Pune-Mumbai highway.

This is the third time the civic body would be floating the tender.

The first tender was floated in 2009 and evoked an extremely poor response. Last year, the state government scrapped the bidding process due to several lapses, which were highlighted by political parties and social activists.

In 2010, three developers took part in the bidding process. However, after the political parties and social activists raised questions about the manner in which the tender was floated and bids decided, the state government scrapped the process.

The PCMC looks upon the project as an iconic development that could be compared to the City Centre in Houston, US, or Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla complex. The PCMC intends to develop the project on public private partnership basis.

Up to 50% of the space will be allocated for retail outlets.
The land chosen for the CBD is located on the intersection of the two proposed bus rapid transit system (BRTS) routes: the Pune-Mumbai highway and the Kalewadi-Dehu-Alandi Road routes. The plot had earlier been allocated for a science park project.
