After the successful implementation of the pilot project of providing 24x7 water supply to Mulund, the BMC is planning to replicate it in the nearby areas of Ghatkopar, Vikhroli and Bhandup.

Though the civic body is apprehensive of implementing the ambitious project all across the city, the plan is to increase the sustainable span of the project.

The aim of the pilot project was to study the feasibility of tackling water crisis in the city grappling with uneven distribution network. The civic body had envisaged the ambitious plan in 2007 to provide continuous water supply to the city.

In last two months, there was no complaint from the areas where the project was implemented.

“This has given a boost to the project’s success and it can be extended to the nearby areas so that the water distribution pattern can be studied closely. Also the areas added are near the two water treatment plants at Bhandup and Pise-Panjrapol, which makes it easier for the civic body to supply additional water to the ward without disturbing the supply to other wards,” said Rahul Shewale, standing committee chairman, who is monitoring the project’s progress.

Though the senior civic officials and the water department are tight-lipped about the new areas added, sources claim that the civic administration wants to be sure about the plan before making it public.

“It may happen that the project would get a good response in the supply and distribution network. But if things don’t work as per the plan, it would fall flat on the civic administration and the project might be put in the cold storage forever. So, the department is handling it in a without making it public,” said sources.

The BMC’s water department is reviewing the project in Mulund east and west. Mulund receives around 120 million litres of water daily (MLD) and gets water supply for around 12 hours. In order to provide around-the-clock water supply, additional 10% water or 12 MLD, is pumped in.

Before implementing the project, the water department will have to install electronic meters in the areas and identify and disconnect illegal water connections.

New flow meters will be installed on pipelines to check the water flow.
