Even as new guidelines have been issued by self-regulatory bodies on the treatment of animals in advertisements, they are not being followed in Hindi movies.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), which had initially protested against a scene showcasing a bull race in an upcoming movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, has now joined hands with international singer Charo in asking director Zoya Akhtar to delete the offensive scenes.

Poorva Joshipura, chief functionary of Peta India, said, “The bull race is a blood sport that is fast dying in Spain, but glorifying the bull race in which terrified animals run and fight for their lives is unwanted.”

Peta has launched a campaign, Leave the Bulls Alone, to urge the director to remove the scenes from the movie. “Compassionate people around the world are condemning these cruel events in which bulls are taunted, teased and provoked on the streets and then later killed in a bullfighting arena. By glamourising the running of bulls, you are supporting the suffering and deaths of bulls. I urge you to cut this scene from the film before its release,” said the campaign letter which is being circulated among Peta India supporters and the public.
