BJP today accused Congress and NCP of fighting over "plum" portfolios when people of Maharashtra were suffering due to rising prices and power shortage, saying if a new government is not formed by November 3, President's Rule could be imposed in the state.

"If is most unfortunate that while people of the state were suffering from spiralling prices and power shortage, Congress and NCP have failed to form a new government due to tussle over bagging plum portfolios," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said today.

Asked whether BJP would press for imposition of president's rule in the state if the stalemate continued, he said "as per rules, if no government is formed till November 3, President's rule could be imposed.

Javadekar said the present political situation in Maharashtra was contradictory to the set democratic norms. "They have betrayed the people's mandate...they have ignored democratic norms," he charged.
