A 64-year-old heart and diabetes patient died in Bhabha Hospital in Kurla (East) on Sunday after he tried to intervene in a fight.  This happened after the deceased, Sharakat Khan, sustained minor injuries when he tried to intervene in a quarrel between his four sons and neighbours at the Kasaiwada slum colony in Qureshi Nagar.

According to the police, the incident took place at around 11am on Sunday. Their neighbour, Muzbull Khan, and his three relatives assaulted Sharakat’s son, 24-year-old auto driver Tarbez Khan, and his family members with lathis and iron rods as they had previous issues. On hearing about the incident, Sharakat tried to intervene but was pushed by Muzbull and his family members. He collapsed and lost consciousness.

He was rushed to Bhabha Hospital where he passed away while undergoing treatment. Sharakat had been suffering from diabetes and heart trouble for the past ten years.

Tarbez and his three brothers, who sustained minor injuries, were allowed to go after they were administered medicare at Sion hospital.

The police are in the process of registering a murder case against the persons involved. This is the fifth case of a senior citizen murder in the city in a fortnight.

“We have booked Muzbull Khan, Mehtab Khan, Aftab Khan and Saidullah Khan under sections 324 (simple injuries) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code,”  said Bhanudas Dalvi, police inspector of Chunabhatti police station.

“We will be charging the arrested accused under another section — section 302 (murder) of the IPC, after recording the statements of Sharakat’s son and getting his death certificate from the hospital,” Dalvi added.
