The PCMT Bhosari Chowk area has been inundated with sewage water for the last week, causing inconvenience to local residents, shopkeepers and commuters, who are complaining of an awful stench emanating from the stagnant water, which has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

According to some of the aggrieved residents and shopkeepers, the chowk area has virtually become a ‘forbidden zone’.

“We have drawn the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) attention to the problem. But so far nothing has been done by the civic body,” alleged the irked residents, who did not want to be identified.

According to the shopkeepers, the customers are refraining from visiting their shops due to this problem. “How can we carry on with our business in such a situation? Our repeated pleas to the civic body are yet to yield any results,” lamented the shopkeepers, adding that they themselves find it difficult to cross the waterlogged stretch.

The chowk is one of the busiest areas in Pimpri-Chinchwad as several Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) buses leave for different destinations like Alandi, Chakan and Pimpri.

But with water accumulating in the area, commuters are unable to board the buses. They claim that it is impossible to stand at the bus stands as the entire area is flooded with water.

According to some of the residents, a few days ago some officials inspected the site and cleaned up the drain. But the water is still overflowing from the drains.

PCMC engineering department coordinator Dilip Kudale admitted that the civic body is aware of the problem.

“The old storm water drains have broken due to the work on the Bhosari flyover. This has led to waterlogging at the chowk. The civic staff is busy in replacing the old storm water lines at the chowk. The problem will be resolved in some time,” assured Kudale.
