The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has closed its wi-fi system as per the orders of the Pune Police. PCMC computer department chief, Nilkanth Poman, told the media that the police believed that it was being misused in the public domain.

The civic administration had introduced the system during the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) held at Balewadi in 2008.

The facility, set up with the help of the Software Technology Park of India, had enabled the PCMC to have the system at its head office, all zonal offices and the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital. The civic officials communicated official data with this facility.

The PCMC started the online facility for citizens with the help of wi-fi. PCMC e-tendering, water bills, birth and death certificates were functioning on the basis of it. It had planned to start the facility at civic hospitals and octroi posts. The civic administration will face major communication problems after this system is closed. The officials said that alternatives have to be found soon to tackle the situation.
