If a society doesn’t have enough space for parking, then the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) offers a solution. The civic body will let the society park on the roads near their buildings and they just have to pay for it. The scheme has been implemented in Malabar hill and now the BMC wants to extend it to other areas.

Buildings constructed before 1981 did not have parking spaces on the societies premises. People were forced to park their vehicles on the roads. The problem is rampant in Colaba, Malabar hill, Walkeshwar, Girgaon, Grant Road and few other parts of South Mumbai.

There are 84 road pay and park zones across the city. The BMC awards a contract to private contractors. Housing societies too can identify lots near the building for parking and approach the concerned ward officer. “The BMC can charge the society according to the size of the lot and the number of vehicles parked,” said a civic official.

“The BMC had implemented the scheme in the D ward and awarded the contract of pay and park to two societies - Seoni and Dani Sada housing society,” said an official.

According to the ward office, the societies that have been redeveloped left some space for the road line (RL). But the BMC could not widen roads as other buildings were beyond the RL.

The civic body feared that the unattended land could be encroached so they awarded it to societies under the pay and park scheme.

Arvind Mirapur, chief engineer (roads), said that he did not know about the scheme, as it’s a ward level decision. “It is good idea, I will find out more from the ward,” he said.

Subodhkumar, municipal commissioner, said, “There should be adequate parking at all zones. We are thinking of reviewing and amending the parking policy.”
