The Crime Branch on Tuesday claimed to have solved Congress leader Pawan Raje Nimbalkar's murder case.

Two men on a motorcycle gunned down Nimbalkar and his driver Samad Qazi
near Kalamboli on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on June 3, 2006. The Kalamboli
police did the initial investigations. The Bombay High Court transferred the case to CBI in October 2008.

In February, police arrested two men in connection with the murder. After interrogating the two, police found that Rs30 lakh was paid to kill the Congress leader. And the guns used in the killing were bought with Rs5 lakh from the contract money.

"On February 25, officers of Unit 5 got information that a person in Shahu Nagar in Mahim (east) would be dealing in arms. Paras Jain and Dinesh Ram Mani Tiwari were arrested from the spot. Three guns and 12 bullets were seized from them," Rakesh Maria, the joint commissioner of police (crime), said. Parasmal Tarachand Bhadali alias Paras Jain, 47, is a resident of Dombivili, and Tiwari, 37, is from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

During one of the interrogation sessions in April, Jain told us that he and a few of his men were involved in the murder of Nimbalkar and his driver. "He told us that he got Rs30 lakh as supari for the killing. A few days before the incident he met another person at Vishwas Club in Mumbra where they discussed about the shooters they would hire for the killing," Maria said.

Jain told the police that he lured Nimbalkar on the pretext of buying a land which the leader wanted to sell. "On the day of the incident, Jain told Nimbalkar that they would meet near the highway. Once Nimbalkar's white Skoda neared the designated spot, two assailants overtook the car and fired at him and his driver," Deven Bharti, the additional commissioner, said. The two were killed on the spot. One of the shooters was Tiwari, he said.

Jain supervised the entire incident. After the killing, the shooters fled in a green Indica leaving behind their weapons near the Skoda. Jain told us that there were five others involved apart from Tiwari and he, senior inspector Dilip Rupwate said.

“We gave a report of our investigations to CBI on May 5. CBI officers on Monday took custody of Tiwari and Jain from Arthur Road jail," Maria said.

“The two will be in their custody till June 1. I cannot reveal who gave the supari for Nimbalkar's killing because it can jeopardise CBI investigations,” he said.
