Patients at Nair hospital, one of the biggest civic hospitals, bore the brunt of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) water cut on Monday, the first day of the restricted supply. The cut will be in effect up to May 12.

As many as 57 operations, including dialysis procedures and surgeries for child delivery, had to be cancelled at the hospital because of water shortage. Four surgeries had to be transferred to Parel’s KEM hospital, which itself reeled under a 25% cut.
“The water cut disrupted the hospital’s functioning. Some operations had to be rescheduled, while the urgent ones were forwarded to KEM,” said Dr Ravi Rananavare, dean, Nair hospital.

As part of its tunnel reinstatement work, the BMC cut its supply to South Mumbai and some western suburbs on Monday. Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Nariman Point, Backbay Reclamation, Fort, Churchgate, Malabar Hill, Peddar Road, Tardeo, and Grant Road had no water supply. Prabhadevi, Parel, Worli and Dadar faced a 25% water cut. Suburban areas like Santa Cruz, the Bandra Kurla Complex, Bandra, Khar, and Jogeshwari faced a water crunch because of low pressure.

Water lines in these areas have been isolated for repairs to be carried out in the water mains. The Tansa (east and west), Upper Vaitarna and Vaitarna trunk water mains are being replaced with a tunnel, having a diameter of 3,000mm, from Maroshi to Ruparel College. Also, a 2,400-mm butterfly valve needs to be replaced with a 2,500-mm one on the Bhandup-Maroshi main as part of the Maroshi-Vakola-Mahim-Ruparel tunnel project.

Nair hospital authorities said that on Saturday, too, around 30 surgeries had to be postponed. Though the water cut officially came into effect on Monday, they said that the supply has been less than usual for the past three days.

“Patients have been facing a lot of problems because of water shortage. Operations have been either delayed or postponed. The civic administration should take note of this and take some action so that patients are not inconvenienced,” said Shiv Sena MLA Ravindra Waikar.

Additional municipal commissioner (health) Manisha Mhaiskar has issued directives to supply water to hospitals by tankers. “We are making efforts to supply water to civic hospitals that fall in the affected areas. A circular has been issued to do the needful so that patients do not suffer,” she said.

Residents, too, grappled with water shortage at their households.
“We ordered water tankers. Notices and messages were put up in the society,” said KR Puri, a resident of Cuffe Parade.
